Making an impact workshops

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Events

We know that libraries make a huge difference to the lives of individuals and communities, but there is little evidence to show exactly how they impact. Much of what we know is anecdotal, and while individual stories can be powerful advocacy tools, they’re not enough when making the case to decision makers. These stories need to be accompanied by more data on impact.

Feedback during the LOFE evaluation and from our makerspaces workshops showed us that many found demonstrating impact to be difficult and wanted guidance on how to do it. In response to this, we’re working with Darren Smart (Strategic Manager Operations for Libraries, Registration and Archives in Kent) to design a series of workshops. The aim of these is for library services to learn techniques for collecting and using impact data for:

  • evidence based decision making
  • advocacy to decision makers
  • funding applications

What will the workshops cover?

We know that it’s invaluable to hear from people who’ve already embarked on this journey and to learn from their real-life experiences. The workshops will incorporate a mix of presentations, interactive exercises and plenary discussion groups and feedback sessions, including:

  • an overview on measuring outcomes and why they’re important
  • case studies from library services and others outside the sector who are successfully measuring impact
  • an interactive session where you can have a go at designing your own framework for collecting impact data

Booking details

We’re holding 2 free workshops:

All events will run from 11:00 to 16:00 (registration will open at 10:30), and lunch and refreshments will be provided. You can find the agenda for the day on the eventbrite links.

Who should attend?

These sessions are aimed at library staff at all levels who want to learn new methods for measuring impact. This includes libraries which are council-run, commissioned or community managed.
